Save Money on Heating Your Home This Winter!

By: Jack Chary

It’s that time of year, the days are getting shorter and the mornings are getting chillier and chillier. Any day now your area may experience its first frost, which may prompt you to turn your source of heat on, if you haven’t already done it. But, a lot of families feel like heating their home is a sacrifice, but it doesn’t have to be. There are several things you can do that will not only conserve energy, but also help you save money on your heating bill.

1.) Consider doing an energy audit on your home. Go along windows and doors to see if you can feel any leaks. If you happen to have a window or door that is leaking, you can purchase some window tape or something similar to help keep the cold out. If you feel like all your windows and doors are leaking, you may want to consider replacing outdated windows and doors, with more energy efficient ones. This may seem like a huge cost in the beginning, but it will save you so much money in the long run.

2.) Close off areas of your house that don’t get used. Do you have a guest bedroom that hardly gets used? Then you may want to close vents and close the doors to keep the heat in other areas of your house that do get used. You may also consider closing off mudrooms, and laundry rooms to help conserve on heat.

3.) Space heaters are also a great way to conserve heat, especially if your house is primarily heated by propane. Not only will in conserve your propane, but it will also conserve energy if you only turn them on in rooms you are currently using.

4.) Keep your house at a consistent temperature. Even if the people in your home have to wear socks and keep their sweaters on, it will be worth it, because keeping your home at the same temperature will keep your furnace from running all the time which will save you money. You should also turn down your thermostat if you aren’t going to be home for a long period of time.

5.) Keep your furnace and other heating equipment operating in tiptop shape. Be sure to replace filters and keep everything tuned up, to keep your furnace from working too hard and to save you from a huge repair bill in the future.

6.) Consider filling up your propane tank before it gets cold. Most propane companies offer a discount if you fill it up while its still warm out. You may also want to have your propane tank put on a “keep full” list. This will allow you to pay to have it filled once a month and get dibs on prices when they may be the cheapest.

As you can see there are several things you can do to save money on your heating bill and conserve energy. By applying these simple tips in your home, you will be able to keep your home warm and heating cost within your budget.
