Softlips PURE, organic lip conditioner: My Review

I was lucky enough to win the two newest additions to the Softlips Family... Organic Honey Dew and Organic Pomegranate!! I won these lip lovies from Fashion Fling, a fabulous forum I found that has awesome giveaways and whatever other tips, ideas, and information you could ever want or need having anything to do with fashion! I recommend checking it out! Anyway, I must say, using softlips definitely results in soft lips!! I'm very impressed, and I have tried many various brands and kinds of lip glosses and lip conditioners, so I figured a review was in order!! Why would I definitely, positively recommend buying this product? Let me tell you...
  • Softlips PURE Honeydew and pomegranate are certified organic and 100% natural
  • They glide on so smoothly...you don't have to use more than one coat to completely moisturize and smooth your lips!
  • I'm a lipstick wearing lady, and my lipstick seems to go on even smoother and cleaner over the softlips! And there isn't any of that gunky gooey lip junk that seems to magically materialize with other lip glosses and moisturizers.
  • The softness and smoothness lasts nearly all day! I put my make up on at about 8am, and when I get home from work at about 5pm, my lips are still smooth and soft...and my lipstick seems to look much fresher and smoother on top of the softlips! I love it!!
  • It comes in a slim, compact little case that easily fits anywhere
  • It has 100% natural honeydew and pomegranate flavor...and its taste is subtle yet yummy
  • Free of gluten and pesticides...and softlips are animal cruelty free!! Super plus!!
  • And best yet....they are affordable!! This mama surely isn't going to spend more than a few bucks or so on a lip conditioner (I didn't say I never have, I said I'm not going to NOW), they cost between $3-$4....WOW! Last time I was at Target, I saw them for $3.69, not bad So the bottom line here is......if you are looking for a cheap, yet luxurious lip softener, that works great alone or even better under your lipstick...look no further (well, then your nearest store shelves:)

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day?? Not So Happy Maybe.

A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. From:Martin Luther King, Jr., Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?, 1967. "We must work unceasingly to uplift this nation that we love to a higher destiny, to a higher plateau of compassion, to a more noble expression of humanness" -Dr Martin Luther King These are two quotes that seem to, in my opinion, summarize the message that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to spread. The message that he lived for and lived by and ultimately died for. The message that on this day, the day that not only do I not have to go work, but the day that I actually think about something more than myself. Something I personally have been studying for a while, due to my profession (if you don't know I'm a teacher). Have we achieved Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dreams? Before you say, "Yes, of course. This nation has come a long way since the time of King's life. Things are better now......." read the statistics below. And I do believe, for the record, that Obama's presidency will be the greatest thing that this nation could have received, and that is definitely going to be a huge step in the right direction for all who care about humanity. However, one would be naive to think that he alone can make the changes necessary to become the nation that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamt about. It's going to take ALL people to come together for change on this... According to "America's Cradle to Prison Pipeline", a 176 page report published by the Children's Defense Fund in October 2007: (All statistics are of the US only)
  • Every single day in America, 4 children are killed by abuse or neglect
  • A baby is born without health insurance every 47 seconds(by the way...90% of the 9 million...yes 9 million uninsured children in the US have a working parent. )
  • Every two minutes a baby is born at a low birthweight. A large percentage of these are to women who were uninsured throughout their pregnancy.
  • Every single minute a baby is born to a teen mother in the US.
  • 77 babies die before their first birthday every single day. A large amount of these deaths are of uninsured babies.
  • A child is born into poverty every 36 seconds
  • There are 5.6 million children IN THE UNITED STATES who live in extreme poverty
  • Every 3 hours a child or teen is killed by a firearm. That's 32 children per day. The equivalent of the tragic Virginia Teh massacre....every single day in the US...which did you hear most about on the news?
Now....let's break it down by races.
  • Black babies are twice as likely as white babies to be born at a very low birthweight
  • Latino children are three times as likely, and black children 70% more likely to be uninsured. (Keep in mind.....9 in 10 of uninsured Latino children and 3 in 4 of black children have a working parent).
  • A Black baby boy born in 2001 has a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison in his lifetime. A latino boy has a 1 in 6 chance, and a white baby boy has a 1 in 17 chance. {I don't know about you....but this is scary! My son was born in 2001....makes you think. }
  • Although Black children constitute only 16% of all children in the US, 32 percent of children in foster care are Black.

How has it changed in the last several years? This is a grim outlook at best:

  • In 2006, the number of uninsured children in the US from ages birth -18 ROSE for the second year in a row. That means another 707,000 children have become or been born uninsured in just one year, 2005-2006.This increase is nearly double the increase that existed from 2004-2005
  • On any given night in the US, 200,000 children are homeless.
  • Child poverty in America has continued to grow in recent years. In 2006, 17.4% of all children were poor. (That's 13 million children)

What does that mean for our nation? What does all of this stand for?

  • It's not about money, its about values
  • US child poverty rates exceed those of all other industrialized nations, even nations less industrialized than we are.
  • The $100 billion or more we spend on the Iraq war could lift every single child in the nation out of poverty TWICE OVER.
  • States spend nearly three times as much per prisoner than they do per student in school spending. {Gee...if the money was in education in the first place, less would be in prison} Doesn't take a rocket scientist...does it?

Well...what can I do?

  • Everybody has a part to play in their own special way. I know that through my job, I am helping to close that gap and help children every day. I also mentor troubled youth and plan to foster parent once my kids are older. But not everybody's job may entail that type of work. But there is still so much you can do! One of my goal's for 2009 is to get my kids involved in helping make a change!
  • Join Obama in renewing America! Sign up for updates and get more information on how you can help by signing up to Renew America Together at USAservice.org
  • You can even find opportunities for you and your children to volunteer in your area at USA Freedom Corps
  • Find opportunities in your area to become a mentor at Mentoring.org**This is an awesome opportunity for college students who are planning to work in education or with children to get some experience and help their resume while changing lives at the same time. By the way...did you know that January is National Mentoring Month? Now you know:)...You saw the ad campaigning for this at the top of this post...right?
  • Check out all of the ways you can help change America right from your computer! Go to Poverty In America: Take Action and check it out!
  • Spread Dr. King's message to your kids....and then let them have fun with tons of fun online activities related to today's holiday here

Quotable Sunday, 1/18/09

It's Quotable Sunday again....time flies dosesn't it?! Want to join in the fun? Come on, it'a a great way to meet other mommy bloggers and check out some new blogs that you might not have otherwise found!! Here's the steps for any newbies that want to join in this week:
  1. Create a post on your blog which includes one or more of your favorite quotes and whatever else you want to include...any quotes you want!
  2. Click over to A Daily Dose of Toni and sign Mr. Linky with your name and a link to your post so everyone knows you're participating!
  3. Visit the other bloggers' Quotable Sundays posts, read their quotes and let them know what you thought!! Easy peasy!!

So....I was thinking about what topic I should center on today......and I got to thinking about tomorrow, Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Tomorrow I have a very informative, yet disturbing bit of truth regarding King's "I have a Dream" speech that I'm going to post about. Did we achieve his dream in America? Far from it. Although we are the richest nation, we continue each year to increase the amount of children who are without health insurance. The gap between minorities and whites regarding income and poverty increases rather than decreases each day. I hope you check out my post tomorrow, it's definitely an eye opener!!! So for today...I decided that I will post quotes about COMPASSION...why? Because compassion is what is missing from our nation and our leaders......and it's up to us to pass it on to our children.

  • Keep in mind that the true meaning of an individual is how he treats a person who can do him absolutely no good. Ann Landers
  • Never look down on anybody unless you're helping them up. Jesse Jackson
  • Until he extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace. Albert Schweitzer
  • That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, make a life. Arthur Ashe
  • When a man is singing and cannot lift his voice, and another comes and sings with him, another who can lift his voice, the first will be able to lift his voice too. That is the secret of the bond between spirits. Hasidic saying

Thoughts? Feelings? Favorite quote? Mine is for sure the Martin Luther King Jr. one, it's so true! Now only if our entire nation could understand that one, simple, quote.....would the world be a better place? For sure!!

My review: The Abby Roo Bag!! A Mother's Best Friend.

I know I can't possibly be the only mama who never can find just the right purse or bag!! I can't even tell you how many times I missed an important call because I couldn't find my ringing phone in my junkyard of a purse!! Or, what about the time that I was at work, looking for some change in my purse for a soda pop....digging and grabbing around in there for 3 minutes straight...just to have a tampon come flying out in front of several men I work with including my boss?! (true story...unfortunately). Oh...and don't even get me started about the fumble fingers I had while scouring my latest purse at the cash register of Target, promising the clerk that my ATM card is really in there...just give me one more second to find it?!
So what's a mama like me to do? My husband tells me to stop bringing every earthly belonging along with me and just use a wallet like he does........thanks dear....but once again....you don't get it!! I can't leave the house without a myriad of receipts, pens, coupons I won't be able to find when I get to the store, notes from the kiddos that I forgot to sign the day before, a cough drop or two, unopened mail, many coins and various forms of makeup that I just might need! Don't forget the wallet, checkbook, tissues.....you know the drill!! Of course, I have attempted to find the perfect purse or bag and have a closet full of useless purses and bags of every color and style that I loved at the store and hated to use. I finally resolved that I'd have to switch from a purse to a bag for whatever I was doing, thus constantly forgetting one thing or another in the other purse (husband rolls eyes...."How many purses do you have?...I have one wallet")
I've tried small hobo bags, large hobo bags, clutches, backpack type bags, laptop bags, briefcase bags...you name it...I've tried it.....But I finally found the only bag I'll ever need.......ever!! And every mama knows when we find a bag that floats our boat it's a serious celebration!! A few months back, I won this AbbyRoo bag from a blog contest...and the two of us have been inseparable ever since!! I've had so many compliments on this bag and people asking me where I got it that I decided it would be the perfect product to do a review on!! I really think all mamas would fall in love with this AbbyRoobag as I did....Why? Well...I'll tell you..
  • The cotton/canvas material looks sharp and clean at all times..(AND it's even machine washable...I've washed mine twice already and it's good as new)
  • The 17" by 15" size of the main compartment fits everything from large binders and books to women's boots, diapers and clothes. The also large back pocket is just the perfect size to carry along your laptop.....with ease!!
  • The 2 1/2" wide shoulder strap allows you to conveniently wear the bag around your body to keep your hands free, or it can be knotted and worn over the shoulder!
  • Over the holidays, I literally used this as an overnight bag when visiting family for Christmas! I packed all of my clothes and toiletries and still had room for diapers and clothes for my little guy...ONE bag for the two of us for overnight!!
  • Unzip two full length zippers on each side of the bag, and it opens to reveal:

two 5" x 4" mesh zippered pockets

two 5" x 6" mesh zippered pockets

two 7" x 10" mesh zippered pockets

two 16" x 6" mesh side pockets

Check out all of these zippered yet see through mesh compartments!! Nothing will ever fall to the bottom of your purse again!! This bag has a main compartment 17" by 15", a back pocket perfect for a laptop, and the huge compartment that has all of the zippered pockets!! I've been able to carry this ONE bag in place of a purse, diaper bag, and bag to bring to work! I'm a teacher, and this bag holds 2 2" binders in its full sized compartment alone, plus my laptop, AND all of the other regular purse items!! It's available in black and white and also customized as cheer and dance bags! That's not me in the pic, BTW, that's the picture from the AbbyRoo site!!
Now...I've happened upon a bag that I can use as a carry it all bag that is cute, comfortable, organized, functional, and affordable! At $39, it's a deal! Go get yours at AbbyRoo today.

Quotable Sunday, 1/4/09...Join the Fun!!

One of the plans I have for this blog in 2009 is to gain more visitors and comments, what about you? I will be showing you tons of ways to gain readers, comments, followers, subscribers and general traffic in upcoming months, but for now... here's a fun way to do just that!
OK, here's how to play along!! This is the very first QUOTABLE SUNDAY of 2009!!
First, you find one or more of your favorite, most inspirational quotes and create a post on your blog, listing the quotes and whatever else you might like to include.
Second, visit A Daily Dose of Toni (she's the one who started Quotable Sunday)and sign her Mr. Linky with a link to your Quotable Sunday post to let her know you're playing along.
Lastly, check out all of the other participants quote posts, and leave comments for them letting them know what you thought of their quotes and post! It's not only inspiring to read others' quotes, but a great way to meet new bloggers, hopefully make some new bloggy friends, and get some visitors/comments to your blog!! C'mon mama, join in!! So, since I'm a Language Arts teacher, I use quotes often to get my students engaged and discussing. Here are a few of my favorite, most inspirational, discussion prompting quotes!!
  • Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference. by Virginia Satir
  • Most of the shadows of this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine.Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. by Eleanor Roosevelt
What do you think? Inspirational? Words to live by? I think so.
I chose to include these three quotes, because they help me to remember that I am in control of my own happiness. Too often, we let our happiness come from outside, rather than from inside. Gratitude and thankfulness can bring miracles to anyone!!!

Mom Blogger Goals.....What are Yours?

2009 just began, and 2008 is soon to be a mere memory!! With a new year comes new goals, especially for mamas!! Many mamas have New Year Goals regarding motherhood, marriage, friendships and family. Other mamas may have New Year goals regarding career and education, and others may have goals regarding their home and budget, and last but certainly NOT least, mamas often have New Year goals centered around getting their bodies in shape and losing weight. And most mamas, if you're like me anyway, have goals for all of these areas of our life and then some!!!
My New Year's goals center around getting into better shape (I will be following my getting into shape/weight loss on my blog), making more time to visit family that live out of town, doing more family activities, grading my students' papers on a regular basis (these Marathon 12 hour grading frenzies gotta stop!), and organizing closets and storage areas in my home(yawn...gaag). What are your personal goals for 2009? Are they similar to mine?
As 2009 has begun to unravel like a mysterious surprise...I've been reading about many Mom Bloggers and their Mom Blogger Goals!! All of the buzz got me thinking about my own Mom Blogger Goals. What do I want to achieve in bloggyland this year? Do I want to get more subscribers, followers, hmmm...I'm still working on my own Mom Bloggers goals, what about you?
