Talking to kids about tragedy
Talking to children about tragedy is a job most parents would love to avoid. If only our children did not need to hear about things like this week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti. But of course, they do hear. My students at school as well as my own kids at home have been very touched by the images they have seen and brushing this event to the side will only cause them to have fear and worry.
What’s going to happen to the children? Can I do anything to help the children I see on TV?And they are full of questions: Could this happen to me?
World Vision US, a Christian humanitarian relief organization with hundreds of staff on the ground in Haiti, suggests eight ways to make a tough job a little bit easier.
1. Start by listening.
Find out what your kids already know. You can then respond in an age-appropriate way. The aim is not to worry them with the devastating details, but to protect them from misinformation they may have heard from friends or disturbing images they may have seen on television.
2. Provide clear, simple answers.
Limit your answer to the question asked and use simple language.
3. If you don't know the answer, admit it
If your child asks a question that you can't answer, tell them so, and then do some research to try and help them sort it out. If they ask “Why did this have to happen?” don't be afraid to say “I don't know.” If you are part of a faith community, the reassurance offered there can be invaluable in helping your child sort through the awful truth that awful things happen.
4. Follow media reports or online updates privately.
Young children in particular are easily traumatized, and seeing or hearing about the horrifying details of the quake are more than they can cope with. Adults, too, should ensure they are dealing with their own emotions by talking to others, so they can continue to respond well to their children’s need.
5. Concentrate on making them feel safe.
When tragedies occur, children wonder if the same event could happen in their hometown. If it was an act of nature that could not be repeated in your area, tell children that. Placing themselves in the situations of victims is not all bad—it is a sign of empathy, an essential life skill, but watch for signs of excessive worrying.
6. Give children creative outlets.
Some children may not be prepared to speak about what they have heard, but may find drawing or other creative activities helpful to deal with their emotions and stress. Their drawings can be helpful starting points for conversation.
7. Model involvement and compassion.
Tell your child that, as a family, you will be helping the people in Haiti by giving a donation to a reputable charity such as World Vision.
8. Give your child a chance to be involved.
Being involved in the solution will help relieve some of their anxiety. Invite them to contribute to the family’s gift by giving something out of their piggy bank.
Thanks to World Vision for these tips on how to talk with our children about tragedies such as the earthquake in Haiti. World Vision has been working to improve life for Haitians for over 80 years and has staff currently there assisting with the disaster relief.

As a mother and a teacher I'm always seeking fun, engaging activities for my children that are educational as well. Things that let them unplug themselves from the Ipods and the cell phones and have fun yet strenghten math, logic and problem solving skills at the same time. So I was delighted to have the opportunity to review the MasterMind Board Game and to give one away to one lucky reader too!
MasterMind is a classic game that has been around since the 70's and since then has sold over 55 million copies in over 80 different countries! It's been a great resource for parents and teachers for over 30 years! And MasterMind even won the Dr. Toy Best Classic Toy Award for 2009!
MasterMind Board Game is a game of logic and deduction. The 2 players must use strategy, logic and problem solving skills to outsmart their opponent. One player is the codemaker and sets a code of colored pegs. The other player is the codebreaker and attempts to break the code with help from clues given by the codemaker. The 2 players take turns being codemaker and codebreaker and whoever breaks the code in the least amount of moves wins!
Check out this quick commercial:
So...What Did I think About MasterMind?
I started out playing the game with my almost 14 year old son one night and it turned out to be alot of fun! The two of us can get pretty competitive, and this game was right up our alley!
Right away I liked how little room the game takes up and how simple it is to set up and get started. I'm a dedicated directions-reader so my son set it up while I read the instructions. They were clear and easy to understand and we took turns being Codebreaker and Codemaker!
I really enjoyed playing this with my son because it allowed us to forget the rest of the world and just focus together on something which is all too rare around here! We also got to communicate and have conversations which I liked, it's not the kind of game where you just sit there silently and stare at cards or tiles! You provide clues to your opponent as they attempt to break your code!
I will say that I was very impressed with my son and got to see his higher order thinking skills in action which was nice! I'd like to say I won each and every time but ah, seriously, my son kicked my butt at this game!
The game is made for ages 8 and up so my 8 year old son and I also had some fun playing against my oldest son. Obviously, the two of them are not even matched opponents, so I worked with my younger son to play against his big brother. You do need to have two players who are somewhat evenly matched in that aspect or the older sibling will crush the younger sibling.
With my 8 year old son, I was impressed with how much thinking and problem solving he was engaging in! He was strategizing and thinking up a storm! It was refreshing to see him that stimulated and I was thrilled with just how educational MasterMind Board Game truly is. As a teacher, I know very well that kids don't learn just from hearing facts and memorizing them. Kids need to manipulate the information they learn and play with it in many different ways.
When playing the MasterMind game, you develop a code as a codemaker which utilizes your higher order thinking skills in a way that most games don't do! As a codebreaker, you must identify patterns, use deductive reasoning and solve problems by strategizing.
Besides my own kids, I decided to bring the MasterMind game to school one day and try it out with some of the kids in the after school program. (If you don't already know, I teach at a junior high school in my area!) Right away I noticed how appealing the idea of being a codebreaker was the the students! They were ready to challenge each other and my only problem at that time was only having one game! Several students played the game and once again I was impressed with their focus, concentration and thinking! They ignored the computers they were previously clicking away on and played! Since then I've had many requests by students to bring it back so I've promised them I'd bring it back next week! I also found out from several teachers that they have used this game in the classroom for years, especially for Math classes.
I must say that MasterMind Board Game is a definite must have for any home schooling household and classroom alike! It's also a great tool to help you spend some time with your children while helping them to become better thinkers, problem solvers and students!!
MasterMind also comes in several Different Editions including Advanced, For Kids, Travel Size and more!
And thanks to shopatron.com and MasterMind, One lucky Save Your Money Mama reader will win a MasterMind Board Game (Classic Edition) of their very own!

All Moms want their kids to start the day with a healthy breakfast, however, mornings don't always turn out the way we intend them to. With three kids to get going and myself to get ready for work, mornings are the most hectic time of the day for my family. I rely on breakfast cereals often to provide my kids a quick, easy breakfast that they can fix for themselves and that they want to eat. There is always the struggle between the cereals I want them to eat and the cereals they want to eat, and I'm glad that General Mills is doing something to make the delicious cereal our kids want healthier for them to eat. That's a win win situation for Mom.
General Mills has recently announced a commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving. The company has already been reducing sugar in cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.
Think Cereal is unhealthy? Did you know that ready-to-eat cereal eaters consume less fat, less cholesterol and more fiber than non-cereal eaters? Cereals also deliver important vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients, making cereal a top source of key nutrients in children’s diets.
Other cereal benefits:
- Ready-to-eat cereals, including presweetened cereals, account for only 5% of sugar in children’s diets.
- Ready-to-eat cereal is the No. 1 source of whole grains in a child’s diet today.
- More frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights and lower Body Mass Index measures.
As a junior high school teacher, I see the effects of kids who don't eat breakfast each and every day. Students that are hungry never do well and have so much trouble focusing. It's especially easy for parents to allow tween and teen kids to miss breakfast because they can do it on their own, but trust me, they don't always do it. Texting in the morning is more important to many tweens and teens than eating breakfast. Studies also demonstrate the benefits of eating breakfast. A 1998 study showed that children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school. Compared to children who skip breakfast, children who eat breakfast score higher on tests, are less likely to miss class or be tardy, have fewer reported discipline problems, and make fewer trips to the office.
What's Your Family's Favorite General Mills Cereal? Ours is Cinnamon Toast Crunch!! Yummy!
For more information about kids and cereals, please visit The Cereal Health & Wellness Page of GeneralMills.Com
The information regarding breakfast cereals and health was provided to me by General Mills through My Blog Spark. I was also provided with four free General Mills Ceral Product Coupons by General Mills through My Blog Spark, so that my family could enjoy General Mills Cereals for a delicous, healthy breakfast! My opinions are not altered in any way and General Mills Cereal has been a staple in my kitchen for well over 10 years!
