Whenever Therese Borchard was weathering a personal storm, and help was nowhere to be found, her one guiding light was the question, "What would a therapist say?" The result was a sort of therapy scrapbook for rough days--a quick reference for anyone who needs a dose of encouragement, support and tried and true ways to cope.Well, with a full time job teaching junior high, the pink slip I received after 6 years of teaching, 3 kids, one husband, a house and family....rough days are the norm for me. "I'm in".......The book arrived earlier this week and when I got a chance I began to take a look. I love its design and its small and compact enough to fit in my purse (yes....that's where it now lives). I quickly found myself reading bits and pieces all throughout the day and night!
THE POCKET THERAPIST is a compact and accessible guide filled with techniques and advice to help combat everything from addictive behavior to negative thinking.
Now if you have kids you know how reading goes....read a paragraph and then stop to wipe a nose....another couple of paragraphs and then somebody needs something signed right this second...another page gets read and then somebody is crying that their brother threw their blanket in the toilet (what...that's never happened at your house). But you know what? This book is made to read in snippets!
It's organized into 144 Tools and Techniques to help you make lemons out of lemonade and find happiness on the roller coaster we call life. You can read one at a time, or more when time allows. I found myself opening this book every chance I had and even forcing Hubby to listen to "my favorite part" a few more times than he would've liked. I sure had alot of favorite parts!
Not only were some amazing strategies that can help women get through a tough mood or stage in life, but this book made me laugh over and over! Laughing feels good doesn't it? Some snippets of the 144 Rules include:
#48. BEFRIEND YOURSELF. Have you ever wondered how long one of your friends would stick with you if you talked to her the way you shout at yourself?
#20. DON'T GO TO A HARDWARE STORE FOR TOMATOES. I don't think I've ever left a bakery infuriated that they didn't have any hamburger or left a butcher shop disappointed they didn't stock any cucumbers. But I have done exactly that in so many of my relationships.
#70. SAY "OM". I'm not talking a bout yoga. I'm referring to Omega-3 fatty acids.
What I like most about the book is that it is written realistically and gives practical tips that any woman or mom could use in daily life. It reminds us that life is not perfect nor is anyone else. I think the main idea that this book gave me was that I am the only one who is in control of my happiness and my outlook on life. I can choose to deal with life negatively, or I can embrace it and appreciate what I do have rather than dwell on what I don't. It really is like having a Therapist in your pocket or purse!
